Now accepting NHS and private patients at our new Edinburgh dental clinic!

Hello and welcome to our dental blog. Today’s first post will provide you with an overview of some of the treatments and services that you can expect to find here. In future blogs, we will discuss treatments in more detail as well as providing general oral health care advice and related news.

Our new state of the art clinic enables us to provide you with excellent dental care and can help you to not only have healthy teeth and gums, but can also help you in having the best smile possible. We welcome patients of all ages, whether young or old and also believe that preventative dentistry is the key to good oral health.

Let us take a look, briefly, then, at some of the treatments that we have available for you.

General dentistry

Our belief is that preventative dentistry is at the heart of having healthy teeth and gums. While there are many effective treatments available to restore a tooth, it is obviously much better not to need the treatment in the first place. By having your teeth checked every six months, we can help you to take better care of them, and, where any minor issues are found, they can be treated while still in the early stages. A regular six monthly check up could mean the difference between having a small filling or needing to have a tooth extracted for example.

Regular six monthly check ups at our Edinburgh New Town dentist should be kept by patients both young and old. Everyone’s teeth are important!

Hygienist service

Most of us accept the need to take care of our teeth, but fewer perhaps feel the same way about our gums. This is a mistake as not only can gum disease have unpleasant symptoms such as bad breath and soreness, but at its later stage, known as periodontitis, can also damage the bone in which the tooth is held. This can result in teeth becoming loose or even falling out. We recommend that everyone sees our hygienist at six monthly intervals for advice on their gum health and to receive a non-invasive ‘scale and polish’ procedure. We will discuss this in more detail in another blog soon.

Dental implants

Dental implants are now widely recognised as being the most realistic and secure tooth replacement method available. Not only do they replace the crown section of the tooth but also provide you with an artificial tooth root too. This ‘tooth root’ ensures that the implant is strong enough to eat what you like and also remain stable in the mouth. If you wear dentures, you may be aware of the fact that they can move, often at inappropriate times; dental implants will avoid this problem. If you would like to find out more about this innovative treatment, please visit our dental implant page for more information.

Orthodontics

One problem that is quite common but often not addressed is that of crooked and uneven teeth. Not only can this make your teeth unsightly but can also make your teeth more prone to damage and decay.  Often due to not wanting to wear traditional metal ‘train track’ braces, some people avoid doing anything about this. If this applies to you, please talk to us about our range of removable invisible braces. You can now protect your smile and have the convenience of removing your orthodontics when you are eating and when you brush your teeth as well. This allows you to eat without concern about food becoming trapped and means that you can keep your teeth and gums healthy for the duration of the treatment.

Teeth whitening

Almost everyone wants to have a whiter smile. This can be seen by the ever increasing range of teeth whitening toothpastes now available. Unfortunately, anyone using these is likely to be disappointed. For safety reasons, the amount of active whitening ingredient (a form of bleach) available in these is very minimal and you are likely to be disappointed by the results. Our East London Street dental practice has a range of teeth whitening treatments available and, following a consultation with our cosmetic dentists, we will be able to recommend the most effective procedure for your own situation.

Facial aesthetics

Many dental practices now offer facial aesthetic treatments and we are no exception. Before legislation, these treatments were available in sometimes unregulated premises and the results were, at times, not very pleasant at all and sometimes very dangerous. By offering these within a ‘medical’ environment, with fully trained clinicians, you can be sure to receive excellent care in complete safety.  Whether you want to reduce your facial wrinkles or fill out those thinning lips, our facial aesthetics team will be happy to help you.

We hope that you have enjoyed our first ‘taster’ blog and, as mentioned earlier, we will be looking at some of these treatments in more detail in the future, along with other dental related news and information. If you have a related topic that you would like us to cover, please do let us know.

If you would like to register with our practice, we are currently accepting new NHS and private patients. To register, or for more information, please call the 103 Dental and Implant Practice on 0131 608 3219.
